That Dwayne Johnson/Jason Statham/Idris Elba/Vanessa Kirby flick is helmed by David Leitch. He co-directed the first John Wick with Chad Stahelski before going on to helm Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2. Stahelski directed John Wick: Chapter 2 and John Wick: Chapter 3. The two of them represent what could be the only two big movies, especially in North America, that may actually break out this summer aside from Disney flicks and Sony's MCU offering. Oh, and thanks to a solid debut in South Korea ($4.78 million), the film has also earned $142.3 million overseas, giving it a new $303.6 million global cume.
So, yeah, it has now passed $160 million domestic. It has now passed $300 million worldwide. It is now the fifth biggest "part 3" sequel in terms of a domestic gross jump from "part 2." Oh, and it is now leggier than John Wick, with 2.83x its $56.8 million debut weekend. If it can stay the course, it'll possibly top $172 million and be leggier than even John Wick: Chapter 2 ($92 million from a $30.4 million debut).
At this rate, it'll earn around $325 million worldwide on a $75 million budget. That's not a super-super smash, as even Lionsgate's Now You See Me earned $117 million domestic and $351 million on a $75 million budget back in 2013. But it's a hell of a thing for this kind of movie in this kind of theatrical environment. It is already Lionsgate and/or Summit's biggest non-Hunger Games/Twilight domestic earner in unadjusted domestic grosses. Once it passes $167 million, it'll be the second-biggest such title accounting for inflation, behind only Fahrenheit 9/11 ($119 million in 2004/$173 million adjusted).
In terms of worldwide grosses, a theoretical $315 million-plus finish will put it, among all Lionsgate and/or Summit flicks and sans inflation, behind only the five Twilight movies, the four Hunger Games movies, La La Land ($441 million), Now You See Me ($351 million) and Now You See Me 2 ($335 million). It is already Keanu Reeves' fourth-biggest live-action flick worldwide behind Speed ($350 million in 1994) and the three Matrix movies. Anything beyond that will have to be considered a #JohnWick4Goals milestone.

No, I don't know if John Wick: Chapter 4 can continue this ridiculous upswing when it opens on May 21, 2021 against Warner Bros.' Akira movie. This could be a scenario, like the Saw franchise, where things peak on the third go-around and then start to descend accordingly. Heck, John Wick 3 and Saw III are somewhat similar in that they lead toward closure but cut-to-credits on a somewhat open-ended note. Or maybe this one will stay the course and/or finally break out overseas.
The film is the seventh-biggest domestic grosser of 2019 and the 12th-biggest worldwide. That's a win, for sure, but the hope is that, like the Fast and the Furious movies, the saga can eventually both maintain domestic momentum (starting with Fast & Furious) and break out overseas. Now that the franchise is pulling close-to-Ethan Hunt/James Bond/Jason Bourne money in North America, the next challenge is to pull comparable overseas numbers, something closer to the conventional 40/60 versus the current 54/46 domestic/overseas split.
Even a split like Fast & Furious (43/57 in 2009) on a $165 million domestic cume gets the movie to $384 million. How that is done, aside from old-fashioned marketing, is an open question. The film has already flourished via an ethnically diverse cast, although (shameless fan-casting alert) this could maybe/possibly be the series that finally convinces Jackie Chan to play the villain? But if you think that adding Sandra Bullock and Carrie-Anne Moss to the game next time out would help, well, I sure as hell wouldn't disagree with you.
